Mother's Day is just around the corner, and I've been pouring my heart (and countless hours of stitching!) into creating something truly unique for my incredible mom.

This year, I wanted to go beyond a simple gift and weave a story into every stitch, celebrating my Mom with techniques I've recently fallen in love with: blackwork and goldwork embroidery.

My journey to these pieces started with a desire to expand my embroidery skills. I've always been fascinated by the intricate beauty of traditional embroidery, and a few months ago, I finally took the plunge and enrolled in both goldwork and blackwork embroidery courses. What an eye-opener!

One of the most fascinating aspects was delving into the history of these techniques. Did you know that blackwork embroidery, with its delicate geometric patterns, has roots stretching back to Tudor England? Katherine of Aragon is often credited with influencing its adoption into Tudor court fashion following her arrival from Spain, and it became incredibly popular for adorning clothing and household items.

Goldwork, on the other hand, is ancient and opulent, dating back thousands of years across various cultures. From ancient Egypt to medieval Europe, gold threads were used to denote wealth, status, and divine connection. It's a technique that truly makes a statement, catching the light and adding an unparalleled richness to any design.

For these Mother's Day pieces, I decided to combine these two exquisite techniques. I created three individual embroidered items that spell out "MOM" – two 'M's and a heart in the middle. When it came to the patterns themselves, I wanted each one to tell a story of spring and growth. Since we’re finally seeing the first blooms of the season, I leaned into botanical motifs that felt both classic and fresh.

  • The First 'M': I filled this with a structured, stately tulip pattern, representing the bold, bright arrival of spring.

  • The Second 'M': This one features an intricate floral lace design. It has a beautiful, timeless elegance to it—much like the vintage textiles that first inspired my love for sewing.

  • The Heart: At the center of it all, I chose an open honeycomb pattern. I wanted this to radiate the positivity and industrious spirit of bees—a little nod to the way Mum is the "queen bee" of our family, keeping everything sweet and buzzing along!

By surrounding these blackwork patterns with an outline of goldwork, I’ve created a set of "forever flowers." They capture all the delicate beauty of a garden, but with one major perk: these are flowers that will never wilt or fade over time.

This project has been such a rewarding way to blend my new skills with a gift that truly means something.

But I’m certainly not stopping here! With more birthdays coming up on the calendar, I’m already looking forward to exploring even more intricate blackwork and goldwork designs. There is something so special about being able to add a touch of history and deep personal meaning to the presents I gift—one stitch at a time.

Happy Mother’s Day to all the wonderful mums and mother figures out there!
