As the days grow longer and warmer, I always find myself drawn to calming, creative projects that help me slow down and enjoy the season. Hand embroidery is one of those peaceful hobbies that feels just right for summer—something you can do in the garden, on a quiet afternoon indoors, or even on a beach holiday with a hoop in your bag.

That’s exactly what inspired this new beginner embroidery design: a gentle little scene of a whale and fish swimming beneath the words Dream Big. It’s an easy embroidery pattern that’s perfect for beginners or anyone looking for a mindful stitching break.

Beginner Friendly embroidery design

This design is part of a growing sea creature embroidery collection I’m working on, and this particular piece feels like the perfect place to begin your hand embroidery for beginners journey. The idea was to create something cute and uplifting, with just enough detail to keep it interesting without being overwhelming—so you can enjoy the process at your own pace.

It includes just a handful of simple, beginner-friendly stitches, and the wording adds a lovely opportunity for embroidery lettering practice, which I know can feel a little intimidating at first. I’ve added guidance and stitch tips to help you build confidence as you go.

The finished hoop looks beautiful as part of nursery embroidery decor or as a cheerful piece in a bathroom or coastal-themed space. I’ve also seen stitchers use designs like this to embellish tote bags, cushion covers, or even frame them as gifts. It’s a versatile little pattern that suits all kinds of handmade projects and makes a fantastic summer embroidery project.

To give you even more to play with, I’ve included a free bonus mini jellyfish design too—it’s ideal for mini hoops or smaller items like zip pouches or kids’ clothes. Just a small extra to spark more creativity!

You’ll receive the pattern as a digital PDF download, with three hoop sizes included, full transfer instructions, and a stitch guide to walk you through each part—making it a perfect first embroidery project.

This pattern is available now in my Etsy shop. It’s a great piece to work on this summer, whether you’re lounging in the sun or curled up in your favourite chair with a cup of tea and your embroidery thread.

I’ll be adding more designs to this ocean embroidery pattern series soon—think jellyfish, seahorses, and maybe even a shy little crab—so if you like this one, stay tuned or follow my shop to see what’s coming next.

Thanks so much for stopping by the blog. If you decide to stitch this design, I’d absolutely love to see it! Feel free to tag me on Instagram or drop me a message on Etsy.

Until then, keep dreaming big—and happy stitching.
